City of Craft Update

Wow, what a great first day at City of Craft! For those of you who didn't get a chance to make it out yet, don't worry the show will be continuing tomorrow from 11am-5pm. I always love to see the great work from all of the talented participants. What a treat! Some of my faves include the always talented Shannon Gerard's crotcheted cacti and hearts, Holly Hobby's mushroom terrariums, Doublenaut's beer screenprints and Rachel Robichaud's sculpture displays to name a few. I will take some pictures tomorrow and share them with you.

The event will be taking place on Saturday Dec. 18th and Sunday the 19th at The Theatre Centre, 1087 Queen St. W. (at Dovercourt Rd.). It is sure to be an amazing show (just like last years') filled with crafty vendors and cool craft installations. I would like to take this opportunity to showcase the work of some of my students from my recent Introductory Kiln Cast Glass workshop. This workshop was part of the ARTiculate Youth Arts Program.

I'm so proud of all of you for creating such beautiful pieces and being so friendly and inquisitive. I must also give a big thank you to Melissa and Neda for making this happen! Thanks to Alex as well for so kindly allowing me to use her kiln to fire these pieces.

GAAC Conference in Montreal

Hello All,

Last month I attended the wonderful GAAC Conference in beautiful Montréal, Québec. It was an amazing conference and I had the pleasure of sharing a presentation about my work and my experiences with glass as part of the recent graduate's panel along with Karine Demers, Laura Sasseville, Steven Tippin, Brad Turner, and Rachael Wong.

I really enjoyed my stay in Montréal but most of all I enjoyed meeting new friends and spending time with some old ones! All of the demos and lectures that I attended were outstanding and I am very thankful to all of the GAAC members, the people at Espace Verre and all others who organized, participated in, helped out at, attended, and hosted this very successful conference! I must also thank my friends Lauren and Drew for being such gracious hosts that weekend.

New Vases

Hi, sorry for neglecting this blog for so long. I would hate to think that it takes an earthquake and thousands of police, protesters, and numerous world leaders to get me to update my blog, but apparently that is the case. Those of you reading this in Toronto will know what I'm talking about.

Anyway here are a couple photos of some new work, I hope you enjoy them!

My Father's favourite colour!

I achieved this gradation by overlaying two shades of concentrated glass colour over one another. I enjoy watching the different textures and patterns that the silver foil creates as it disperses while the glass is inflated.

One interesting thing about working with hot glass is that the colour always looks different while it is hot than it will look at room temperature. With certain colours you can roughly tell what it will look like cold, but others look completely different when they are around 600 degrees celcius and up. I think this phenomenon is more common when working with opaque glass. This particular vase looked bluer on the blowpipe, but not drastically so.

While I'm on the topic of colour, I would like to mention that I listened to an interesting documentary about Synesthesia on the radio tonight. I had never heard of this condition before, but it was fascinating to learn about it! You can listen to the program here.

The Glassblowing Process

Recently, I have been hard at work preparing for this weekend's City of Craft event, happening Saturday and Sunday. I would like to share with you a few photos taken today which illustrate some of the processes involved in the making of my glass items. Photo credits go to my pal Steven Woodruff.

In the first photo I have a small bubble of coloured glass which I have partially covered in 23k gold leaf.

In photo #2 I have added a layer of clear glass and I am shaping it with a newspaper that has been specially folded and soaked in water.

Photo #3 shows the bubble immersed in the pool of molten glass (1150°C) while I am "gathering" more glass from the furnace onto the bubble.

In #4 the bubble has been freshly coated with new glass from the furnace. You can see how the gold leaf is beginning to spread throughout the bubble and is glowing brighter than the glass.

The glass must then be shaped again with the wet paper (#5).

Photo #6 shows me dripping off the excess glass from my final "gather" from the furnace. Now that I have gathered all of the glass that I will need to make the piece I can begin to start inflating the bubble and sculpting it into it's final shape.

Although the glass appears to be a red or orange colour while it is still hot, this particular piece will be a transparent blue colour tomorrow, when it has cooled to room temperature. The flecks of gold will retain their original colour from photo #1.

Hello Internet,

I have been thinking about publishing a blog for some time now, and now is the time for me to stop thinking about it and start posting!

I had the opportunity to travel to Chicago last week to visit the 2009 SOFA Chicago Exhibition. It was an amazing show and I was blown away by the quality of many of the works exhibited. Unfortunately photography is not allowed at the exhibition so instead I will share some photos that I took while exploring the beautiful city of Chicago.
